The world around us.................

Do you often watch the discovery channel on television or read   encyclopedias and books on plants, animals, planets, natural  disasters, etc.? The texts from those sources are usually informational reports. Do you know how to read and write reports? You will learn those more in this part.
Pay attention the generic structure of report text!

FLOOD

 (what is reported/general clasification)
Flood is an overflow of water that soaks or covers land. Floods are the most frequent type of natural disaster worldwide. It can be caused by several things, naturally and form the effect of human behavior. The most common cause is because of the over capacity of the body of water, e.g. river or lake. As a result some of the water flows outside of the body of water. It can also occur in rivers, when thenstrength of the river is so high that it flows right out of the river  channel. A flood from sea may be caused by a heavy storm, a high tide,a tsunami, or a combination the three.
(general information/description)
Soil and vegetation absorbs most of the surface water, floods happen when there are lack of trees and the soil alone cannot absorb all the water. The water then runs off the land in quantities that cannot be carried in stream channels or kept in natural ponds or man-made reservoirs. A flood can also be caused by blocked sewage pipes and
waterways, such as the Jakarta flood.
There are several types of flood. Periodic floods occur naturally on many rivers, forming an area known as the flood plain. These river floods usually result from heavy rain, sometimes combined with melting snow, which causes the rivers to overflow their banks. A flood that rises and falls rapidly with little or no advance warning is called a
flash flood.

Your Turn Now.....Identify  the generic stucture of this text bellow, and do exercise on the text B!
Text A
TSUNAMI
A tsunami is a series of huge waves that can cause great devastation and loss of life when they strike a coast.Tsunamis are caused by an underwater earthquake, a volcanic eruption, an sub-marine rockslide, or, more rarely, by an asteroid or meteoroid crashing into in the water from space. Most tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes, but not all underwater earthquakes cause tsunamis - an earthquake has to be over about magnitude 6.75 on the Richter scale for it to cause a tsunami. About 90 percent of all tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean.
Many tsunamis could be detected before they hit land, and the loss of life could be minimized, with the use of modern technology, including seismographs (which detect earthquakes), computerized offshore buoys that can measure changes in wave height, and a system of sirens on the beach to alert people of potential

TEXT B

Rainbow
There are many kinds of nature phenomenon, one of them is rainbow. When light and water meet in the sky, for a few moments, a rainbow will appear. Such a beautiful sight! This phenomena of the atmosphere appears during or immediately following local rain, when the sun is shining and the air contains raindrops. A rainbow can best be seen with polarized sunglasses. We cannot follow the arc of a rainbow down below the horizon, because we cannot see those droplets in the air below the horizon. But the higher we are above the ground, the more of the rainbow circle we would see.
Now look at the picture  of the rainbow and then mention the colors!
